US STEEL SET FOR LOCK OUT!!! ( Official Letter to employees below)

This is going to be a very sad time for many US STEEL employees as the latest final contract offer has been rejected by Local 1005. My friend who is one of 900 plus employees affected has sent me the letter he received from US STEEL in regards to being locked out on Sunday November 8th at 7pm. The letter is posted below:

  1. Can anyone reading this point out where we are getting screwed? What is the big NO NO on the final contract that the UNION won't sign.

All these legal mumbo jumbo makes it hard for the regular joe to understand.
    Anyone??

  2. When Stelco was just Stelco, the Union tactics worked because if the mill shut down, profits would be lost. US STEEL has leverage Local 1005 has never seen before. They have other mills to make money and all this is pointless. Bottom line at the end of the day US STEEL is the winner in this, and the workers of Hamilton are the losers.

  4. Can someone point out the RED in this contract??

What is the main issue here??

By the looks of it, the Union is sacrificing the lives and jobs of 900 workers so some of the pensioners who's kids have grown up and houses are paid for can live more comfortably. Will these pensioners be at the picket lines??

  5. I am a pensioner and my son in law is a new hire
Come om Rolf let them vote
I understand the indexing issue and what I will lose, but I am willing to take the hit so the company stays alive and provides work for the young ones.

  6. Regardless of who is perceived to be right or wrong in this dispute, it is obvious to me, as an outsider, that fair play is not at work here. In particular, I refer to the lack of input by the affected employees. While not in any way a union basher, I perceive that the union is doing its members a large disservice in not allowing them to vote on this issue, which affects the very lives of the members, their families, and the community. Taking the high road now, allowing the members to vote, is the right position. Taking the opposite route, is indefensible and possibly actionable. Watch for a class-action suit of union executive if this goes the way it is apparently headed.

  7. I cannot even believe how downhill this city has become. As a young yuppie, I have opted to leave the City because opportunities in my age range are diving (mid 20's) while the young people who actually have work are now being affected and out of job from those in pension. Wow.

  8. As a former employee of both Dofasco and Stelco this is just heartbreaking. Seems like at the end of the day somebody is not going to be happy no matter what they vote on or what direction it goes. I hope US STEEL can get back to the human element and realize that people need to work, feed their family's and pay their bills. Hopefully we can come to a conclusion where the pensioners get to keep what they worked hard for, and workers have jobs.

  9. The impass isn't whats on the contract. Its whats not. The union wants existing pension receivers (non-workers) included in a current labour contract. US steel stopped indexing pensions for retirees once the contract expired. The union wants them to continue andthey have two ways of doing that. 1) go to court in which they may win it back but have been told (just like the salaried employees who had the same thing done years ago by US steel) you might win but probably not or 2) add it to the current labour contract and get a new contract again that they have to honor. They know 2 is the only one with a chance and they are willing to destroy 900 current workers lives and families to get indexing for 9000. Indexing means they aren't on fixed incomes. It rises every year. Sad isn't it. no pay today so retirees can get a raise each year for not working.

  10. Thanks for posting the contract, it's more information than what I've received from my union.

In relation to the comment above, the pensioners have been included in the contract since 1991 through a letter of agreement. When the contract expired on July 31-10 all terms of the contract including the indexing letter of agreement were still in effect due to section 86 of the Labour Relations Act of Ontario, yet US Steel decided to stop paying the indexing. There is currently legal action before the Labour Board for the non-payment of indexing in 2010 citing section 86.
