Ward 10 Councillor Maria Pearson votes against Confederation Park Stadium

Ward 10 Councillor Maria Pearson votes against the Confederation Park site using the "green space" excuse, after proudly parading a massive condo development just months prior, destroying 35 acres of the very same green space she was trying to save today with her vote against Confederation Park. Sadly, I don't recall any "NO" voting Councillors coming to the aide of residents fighting for this very same green space just a few kilometers from Confederation Park. Private or public land, green space is green space.

  1. Wow.

    Fascinating stuff.

Firstly, that you decided to just 'rename' your election blog, arbitrarily co-opting something purportedly being produced for an entire community...and secondly, that you still seem attached to an issue that has clearly been given due diligence since 1973.

The fact that you cannot seem to grasp how the governance process works...instead railing on about how you perceive that 'the will of the people' is paramount, based on a ridiculously small target group...as well as being easily confused by the issue of 'green spaces', being incapable of understanding the difference between 'public' and 'private' ownership...speaks volumes.

Bernard, your readers deserve much, much better...and I think you know it.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

  2. I promised win or lose, that I would continue this blog to serve the community, which became what it is 2 months ago; it’s been awhile and not “just”. I have no attachment to the development project and not even questioning it, what I am questioning is the “NO” vote yesterday with the “green space” excuse by our Councillor and others. If you’re trying to protect the waterfront of its green space, you have to stay consistent. Just because it’s private, it shouldn’t change your morals and values on a month to month basis. Like I said, I am not against the development, but the poor excuse for the “NO” vote yesterday, which I believe throws sand in the eyes of the community with the “green space” excuse. Adventure village, the water park, and two enormous parking lots occupy this green space; I guess I may be colour blind.

  3. Council could have stood up for Ward 10 but actually councillor Pearson lied to them the day of the meeting for this site between Green and Millen road and told other council that there was a majority vote by residents for this development when in fact there was not. The process that the community went through was shady, unfair and there was a lot of misinformation or no information at all. It does not matter if land is public or private. If a community can stand up and speak for itself and provide facts and ask question then it can possibly create change. To this day there have been no answers to the community's questions and the vast maority have been left in the dark. So I applaude Bernard for posting this. He is correct. No one cared about the biggest developnment scheduled to go in between Green and Millen but for some reason this time around everyone is concerned about another one down the street. Maybe the council is listing to the constituents for the wards this time. If that is the case then we are headed in the right direction. I hope Bernard keeps up his blog and keep residents in the loop.

  4. With no jobs and things going nowhere fast, I wonder who will be able to afford to live in these condos. I can guarantee you it won't be a regular Hamiltonian. A stadium at Confederation would drastically decrease the value of these condos, don't fall for the green space excuse, its the protection of the investment of private interests. The only Green that matters in this is the $$$. In all essence your Councillor was right, she needs to protect "green space" as in development money and in turn stick it to Mayor Bob.

  5. To MyStoneyCreek,

As a champion of the City of Hamilton and a proud resident of Stoney Creek, I find myself appalled by your statements. I feel that you're more knowledgeable in your use of grammar, then in resident rights, politics and law, since I feel you write for the sake of writing. You use phrases and words to fool others into thinking you know what you're talking about, when in fact, you don't. As a City law worker myself, what is and has been done regarding the condos at Millen is borderline illegal. Whether her condo development was put into place in 1973 plays no role in current building requirement and resident approval. Anything that is built in that sheer size (which inadvertently affects an entire community) needs to be voted on--private or public--by the residents, and I, being a Ward 10 resident can assure you that a real vote was NOT conducted by Mrs. Pearson, nor were residents notified of news and developments regarding the project.

Thank you Bernard for bringing attention to all the misleading statements brought on by City Council and its unqualified Councilors. Thank you for writing what MOST residents in Ward 10 are thinking. We agree that we are NOT for or against the Confederation location, but Mrs. Maria Pearson using 'green space' and conservation as an excuse is despicable considering she is supervising the construction of a monster condo development down the road.

Keep it up Bernard, you're the voice of the people, or 'unqualified' people as MyStoneyCreek likes to state because he knows 'grammar.' A real open dialogue or 'communion' is based on interaction, so thank you for keeping your comments section open...unlike some bloggers.
