Mandate to require 2 percent renewable content in diesel puts Hamilton BIOX Corporation in the spot light

The Government of Canada revealed new plans today of proposing a July 1st, 2011 mandate for a requirement for 2 percent renewable content in all diesel fuel and heating oil. BIOX Corporation is located in Hamilton is the only publically traded bio diesel producer, with a 67 million litre (17.7 million gallon) plant, which is one of the largest continuous flow biodiesel production facilities in the world.
Currently, Canada produces about 200 million litres (52 million gallons) of biodiesel annually, but will need about 550 million litres (145 million gallons) to meet government quotas.

The Hamilton plant was constructed in April 2007 and was BIOX’s first commercial scale biodiesel production facility, located right here in Hamilton.
Biodiesel is a clean burning, non-toxic and biodegradable renewable fuel that is used as a replacement for or additive to petroleum diesel, it is typically produced from animal fat, used cooking oil, soybeans or canola.
