I support Poverty Reduction in Hamilton.

Hello everyone. The folks at Common Campaign Coalition are raising awareness to poverty in Hamilton. The 3 main focus points of this campaign is to:

Living Wage
We demand...
  • City Council commit to making Hamilton a Living Wage community by the end of its first year
  • City Council direct staff to develop an implementation plan by the end of its third year, ensuring that all city staff as well as contract workers are paid a living wage

Expand Housing Allowance/Rent Supplement for the Social Housing Wait List
We demand...
  • City Council commit to spending the $1 million needed to expand the Housing Allowance/Rent Supplement to accommodate the 400 households currently on the waiting list for rent supplements
  • City Council ensure $3.5 million permanent funding be allocated by 2013 to sustain the program for the 440 households currently receiving Housing Allowance /Rent Supplement
  • City Council instruct staff to create clear policies around the eligibility for the Housing Allowance/Rent Supplement program

Affordable and Accessible Public Transit
We demand...
  • No HSR fare increases for three years
  • Permanent funding be obtained for the Affordable Transit Pass beyond April 2011, and adjusted accordingly to be included in the new Presto fare system
  • City Council advocate for joint funding of a free transit benefit as part of the social assistance program, Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program
  • City Council support the operational plan for upgrading service to ensure that dedicated service routes are expanded or created where local employment opportunities exist
  • City Council continue to advocate strongly for the current Light Rail Transit Plan, expanding ridership and providing resources to reorganize and expand service
