The first
ever flavour of ice cream I tasted at the Stoney Creek Diary was chocolate.
Since I am a very big fan of everything chocolate it was fitting that this
final flavour of ice cream cone I would have there before the doors shut would
be chocolate. I drove by there on Monday evening just to take one last look at
the building in operation and to my amazement I saw a line up wrapped around
the building.
Residents
were willing to stand in line up to 2 hours to get their one last of memory
with their own special sentimental flavour.
Thank you to the Stoney Creek Dairy for being a part of this community.
In 1929,
a young George Dawson began the original Stoney Creek Dairy from a small garage
at the back of his home on King Street, collecting
milk from surrounding farms, bottling it and providing his neighbours with
fresh milk from their own community. Right from the beginning, the Dairy
delivered only the highest quality products and the highest level of service to
its customers. Over the next several years the dairy installed new
equipment, developed its own ice cream recipes and began manufacturing and
serving its own delicious flavours of ice cream.
Twelve
years after starting the dairy, the now legendary Dairy Bar opened and quickly
became a favourite meeting place. To keep up with growing demand, a more
modern facility was built, opening in 1964 still on the original site. In
1974 an older section of the building was destroyed in a blaze, a scary moment
for what had become one of Stoney Creek’s favourite landmarks. The Dairy was rebuilt to the original design
and re-opened in the spring of 1975. In
1979, the Dairy began to focus exclusively on ice cream.
In the
late 1990’s, the facility underwent a massive overhaul, with an investment of
close to $13 Million, to make the Stoney Creek plant a state of the art
manufacturing facility.
Since
december 2010, Stoney Creek Dairy Ltd is owned by Produits Plaisirs Glacés inc.
This company continues production of Stoney Creek Dairy products with the same
quest for superior quality that caracterized Stoney Creek Dairy.
